Suzani

About the artist

Suzani is the pen name of an artist from Tashkent — a childhood nickname earned by her love of her grandmother's suzani embroideries. She has been painting in oils for more than fifteen years; her main themes are light, stillness and the ornament of the East.

I grew up in an old Tashkent courtyard where my grandmother's suzanis — hand-embroidered textiles — hung on the walls. Their pomegranates, suns and blossoming branches still live on in my paintings: I paint the light, stillness and warmth of the East as I remember them from childhood.

For centuries Tashkent stood on the Silk Road: fabrics and spices travelled from here to China, and silk and porcelain came back. It gives me joy that today my paintings travel the same road — to collectors in China and other countries.

I paint every work myself, from priming the canvas to the final varnish, and sell it directly, without intermediaries. Each painting bears my signature on the back and comes with a certificate of authenticity. If you would like to see a painting in person or in different lighting, write to me and I will send you a video.
